Fowley's Falls

One of the best kept secrets in Leitrim

Fowley’s Falls is really exceptional. It is a spectacular series of cascading waterfalls that is the path of the Glenanniff river to Lough Melvin. The sounds, sights and serenity that you experience at the falls will stay with you long after you leave.
A secret gem, known only to locals, in the 80’s, Gabriel Miney, an engineer with Leitrim CoCo and Father Corrigan, the local parish priest, got together to create a scheme to create the walk along the river. With the support of local businessman, Philip Rooney, a bridge was erected over a tributary to the river.

When the scheme ended the walk fell in disrepair so in 2003, Rossinver Community Development Company at New Ballagh took over the care of Fowley’s Falls. With assistance from the local land owners, Coillte, Arigna Leader and CLÁR, we worked to restore and extend, keeping the vision of Gabriel Money and Father Corrigan, ensuring that the walkway does not interfere with nature but enhance it. Fowley’s Falls now boasts of parking spaces and a picnic area.

We didn’t stop there. After a landslide blocked part of the walkway, again with the assistance of local landowners and Leitrim CoCo, in November 2021, works started to repair the landslide and extend the walk and parking. Now you can park, walk to the Organic Centre, pick up a few treats and walk back to the picnic area to sit and enjoy them all the while enjoying the sounds of nature.

We were honoured that the Minister of State, Heather Humpries, Minister for Rural and Community Development and Minister for Social Protection, officially opened the newly improved Fowleys Falls trail in July 2022.
